Alien Encounter
[Disney Vacation Planner]
At A Glance |
20 minute moderately scary
attraction with audio-animatronics and theatrical effects.
There is a minimum height restriction of 44 inches that applies
to the Alien Encounter attraction. |
The centerpiece of Tomorrowland is the Tomorrowland Interplanetary
Convention Center ,
which hosts a presentation by a mysterious company called XS-Tech,
whose objective is to impress the audience by their latest high
tech products, and most particularly by their latest teleporter
technology.
The pre-show area provides a mini demo of their transporter technology,
with a small furry character called Skippy (no relation to the
Bush Kangeroo), being teleported from one bell-jar to another
at opposite ends of the room. The special effects used to create
the illusion of teleportation are actually quite realistic, even
if fairly simple.
After the less than successful demonstration, guests are ushered
into the auditorium for the main presentation. A much larger teleportation
device is located in the center of the room, and screens around
the room display a live transmission from a remote planet, ans
X-S Tech's chairman volunteers to be the subject of the first
live teleportation experiment to Earth.
Needless to say, the teleport goes wrong, and an Alien materialises
in the chamber in place of the expected Chairman. The Alien then
breaks out of the restraining chamber. At this point the lights
go out, and the special effects take over to provide what can
be a very funny, or very scary experience, depending on your point
of view.
Throughout the 20 minute presentation, you are held firmly in
your seat by a shoulder harness, but it's more for effect than
anything, since the most violent movement in the attraction is
a little shaking of the seat at a couple points, and it's certainly
nothing that would actually require any form of harness. (In fact
it's probably more to prevent people from trying to leave the
attraction and find their own way out of the darkened room than
anything).
Note that this attraction is designed to be reasonably scary,
and so is almost certainly unsuitable for younger children, and
those of a potentially nervous disposition. The attraction also
has a minimum height restriction of 44 inches due to the use of
the harness.
