Space Mountain

[Disney Vacation Planner]

At A Glance Great semi dark rollercoaster attraction - not particularly fast, but the darkness aids the ride.

Space Mountain opened in the Magic Kingom in 1974, but despite it's age it remains one of the most popular attractions in the Magic Kingdom. Housed within a futuristic dome that rises to a height of over 180 feet, and is over 300 feet in diameter, is a class Disney-Imagineered roller coaster ride.

The ride lasts for 2 min 38 secs, and only reaches speeds of 27 - 28 mph, but it has a twist in that the ride is reasonably dark, so although it is a relatively slow ride, the sensation of speed is created by the fact that you can only just make out the direction the track takes a fraction before the event.

The ride is surrounded by small glittering bulbs, which are supposed to represent twinkling stars and passing comets.

There is a minimum ride height restriction of 44 inches, and guests under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Guests with known heart or back conditions are advised against riding Space mountain.

Also whilst it's not a particularly fast ride, or as high up the scare-scale as Montu or The Kumba at Busch Gardens, it's quite capable of depositing sunglasses, loose change, and unrestrained purses into the bottom of the ride, so any loose valuables should be secured before riding.
